NURIN opens up an ICT innovation hub in Apac district

Northern Uganda resilience Innovation network NURIN has opened up an ICT Innovation Hub in Apac district with aims of facilitating the growth of an ICT innovation ecosystem and marketplace for an innovative digital product within northern Uganda.

Mike Okwang the NURIN’s project officer confirmed this development early this week saying the hub will mainly target offering ICT related services to the local community within Apac and northern Uganda.

The ICT hub according to Mr. Okwang underpins Uganda’s Digital Vision 2040 strategic intent of transforming Uganda into a digitally enabled society that is innovative, productive, and competitive.

Okwang however said, the Innovation Hub will promote access to and availability of affordable ICT solutions for the local communities and the public and later export these ideas to foreign missions.

Mr. Jimmy Okello the executive director NURIN said their vision is aimed at improving the livelihoods of the northern Uganda community through supporting innovation and incubation spaces; promoting sports and partnering with development agencies, civil society, local government, local media, academia and local knowledge resource persons embarking on nurturing creativity and enterprise as well as offering mentorship to young people in particular as key change agents within the community.

Okello however said besides the ICT hub, NURIN targets nurturing innovative ideas into sustainably viable projects that can be replicated elsewhere in the region.

“We respond to the social and cultural needs of youth and women, in particular, and recognise them in the overall implementation of our programmes. NURIN holds participatory consultations to identify the communities’ developmental needs. We have a repository of skills, experience and a willingness to experiment new ideas. We have built a tradition of excellence that enables us to offer an indispensable service. We are able to reach the communities in their homes, institutions, businesses, workplace and recreation centres”, Okello said.
