Apac Technical school lauds benefits of free Internet

Apac technical school staff using the network

Free internet has significantly enhanced students’ technical abilities, promoted meaningful engagement, and improved educational outcomes almost in all schools connected to the RCBN network. The introduction of the Rural community broadband network (RCBN) in schools has spurred significant progress in research and internet-related learning, driving the development of ICT infrastructure according to the learners interviewed by this website.

At Apac Technical School, many students have highlighted that access to the internet and computer technologies has so far played crucial roles in shaping their educational practices. They have commended institutions such as Makerere University and the Ugandan government for their efforts in improving ICT skills through better internet availability like RCBN.

According to learners, the internet has become an indispensable tool for collaboration and skill development in ICT. They now exhibit high levels of enthusiasm for exploring online resources, which enhances independent learning and fosters idea sharing with peers and the broader community.

Martha Acio, a teacher at Apac Technical School and the in-charge of ICT, has acknowledged several achievements brought about by the network. She has requested additional related equipment so that both learners and staff can compete effectively in the current digital world.

She however highlighted a few achievements including access to a vast array of online educational materials, including e-books, tutorials, and research papers, easy access to up-to-date teaching materials and resources by teachers, development of essential digital literacy and ICT skills by students preparing them for the modern workforce, streamlined administrative processes such as registration, grading, and communication with other parents, reduction in the cost of physical textbooks and learning materials among other achievements.

Government of Uganda throughMakerere University Research and innovations fund in partnership with netLabs!UG and NURIN installed internet equipment in 10 sites including 5 schools in Apac district in 2023 with aims of piloting a model for rural broadband connectivity in support of a knowledge-based economy with a focus on two sectors of agriculture and education.
